Workshop “The Passions in Historical Perspective” (Princeton, 14-16 February)

The Department of Philosophy at Princeton University, in cooperation with the Center for Human Values and the Council in the Humanities is sponsoring a workshop on the Passions in Historical Perspective. Discussion will center on the work of three scholars: Dominik Perler (Humboldt University and Princeton), author of Transformationen der Gefühle : philosophische Emotionstheorien 1270-1670 (S. Fischer, 2011), Susan James (Birkbeck College, London, and Princeton), author of Passion and Action: the Emotions in Seventeenth-Century Philosophy (OUP, 1997), and Denis Kambouchner (Université de Paris-I), author of L’homme des passions : commentaires sur Descartes (Albin Michel, 1995). Commentary will be provided by Marilyn Adams (Australian Catholic University and Rutgers University), Lisa Shapiro (Simon Fraser University), and Jean-Pascal Anfray (École Normale Supérieure, Paris).

        The Workshop will be held in 201 Marx Hall on the campus of Princeton University. It will begin at 10AM Saturday February 15. Lunch will be provided on site.

          There is no fee, but those who would like to attend are requested to RSVP to Daniel Garber (dgarber@princeton.edu) by February 10.

    Connected with the Workshop on the Passions there will be a workshop for graduate students working in the History of Early Modern Philosophy on February 14 and 16. For more information on that, please write Daniel Garber.
